Richard W. Price

Editor, Proofreader

During his 34½ years as editor and head of the Publications Department at The Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG) in Corning, New York, Richard Price oversaw the creation—from initial manuscript to finished volume—of more than 40 books on various glass-related subjects. He also worked with leading scholars, curators, conservators, and scientists from around the world in reporting new glass research in the scholarly Journal of Glass Studies, an annual publication of the museum. In addition to revising and refining texts, Rick fact-checked content, prepared bibliographies, and created indexes for the volumes he superintended.

“A project with Rick is an exacting exercise in precise grammar and correct English usage,” said Christopher Maxwell, CMoG’s curator of early modern glass and principal author of In Sparkling Company: Reflections on Glass in the 18th-Century British World, the last book Rick edited for the museum. “He makes a virtue of fastidiousness, and his commitment to fact-checking names, dates, and citations has spared the blushes of many an author and safeguarded the scholarly excellence CMoG is so proud to nurture.”

Rick is now a freelance editor and proofreader. In those roles, he helped to produce Venice and American Studio Glass, which was issued in conjunction with an exhibition at the Stanze del Vetro in Venice, Italy, from September 2020 to January 2021.

In addition to the fine and decorative arts, Rick’s interests include classical music, history, and theological and biblical studies. Rick holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Bowling Green (Ohio) State University. He studied music criticism at Elmira (New York) College, where he received his master’s degree. For a decade thereafter, he served as copyeditor for The Leader newspaper (Corning, New York), for which he also wrote reviews of concerts and plays.

For the last 19 years, Rick has served as pianist and organist at two United Methodist churches pastored by his wife, Sheila, and studied New Testament Greek. In 2013, he assisted in the writing of God Grant It: Daily Devotions from C. F. W. Walther, issued by Concordia Publishing House.
